Their story began in 1959, when Rodney Strong envisioned Sonoma County as a special place for producing wine. A true pioneer in Sonoma County, Rodney Strong led the way for the future of Sonoma County winemaking. Rodney Strong Vineyards was the 13th winery bonded in the newly discovered Sonoma County wine industry.
Today, led by the Klein family since 1989, Rodney Strong Vineyards is a family of passionate people committed to crafting premium wines, meaningful experiences and sustainable leadership in Sonoma County. DAVIS BYNUM
In 1973, when Davis Bynum first released his small lot of single vineyard Pinot Noir from the famed Rochioli vineyard in Sonoma County’s Russian River Valley, Pinot Noir was a relative stranger to the region, but the fickle grapes thrived in the unique terroir. The first to produce single vineyard Russian River Valley Pinot Noir, Davis Bynum was instrumental in bringing the prestige to Russian River Valley vineyards, still acclaimed as one of California’s finest Chardonnay and Pinot Noir growing regions.
Since 2007, the winery remains in the capable hands of proprietor Tom Klein who, along with winemaker Greg Morthole, honor the expertise and shared innovative winemaking spirit with founder, friend and mentor Davis Bynum. Humbled and proud to be carrying on the Davis Bynum legacy, Greg is committed to staying true to Bynum’s philosophy. Through bold innovation in the vineyard and the cellar, his deft guidance keeps the winery moving forward, while never losing touch with the past. Today, more than forty years later, the heritage of Davis Bynum lives on through the hand-crafted creation of wines grown exclusively in Russian River Valley. ROWEN Wine Company is a study in Sonoma County terroir—untethered by trends or tradition yet grounded in the history of the land. It is built around an indomitable, independent way of life – each bottle encapsulates the spirit of the American West. It’s unconventional. It’s unique. And it’s blazing new trails with a variety of Bordeaux-style blends—the kind of wines that anyone who values creativity and hard work can appreciate.
About Cooley Ranch Vinyard in Sonoma County, California:
Bordeaux varietals thrive on steep terrain and volcanic soil and our Cooley Ranch Vineyard is precisely the kind of landscape for these grapes with elevations ranging from 500 to 2,040 feet. Some have steep slopes. Others have very steep slopes. Views from these blocks are other-worldly to say the least. From one, named Dawsons, Lake Sonoma spreads out like a glimmering diamond necklace. From another, named Red Mountain, you are looking at rugged Mendocino County to the north. Cooley Ranch Vineyard sit above the fog line therefore the grapes get increased sun exposure, which inspires thicker skins. The grapes grow above the hot valley and, they also stay cool during scorching days, which leads to denser, richer tannins. “We quite literally took the best of the best of the land here and put it under vine,the result is some of the most incredible fruit you’ll ever taste in your life.” Ryan Decker, Director of Estate VineyardsWhile most of the fruit on Cooley Ranch Vineyard is Cabernet Sauvignon, the property grows all five traditional Bordeaux red varietals—Cabernet, Malbec, Petit Verdot, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc—as well as a little Syrah and Viognier. Decker and his crew essentially dry-farm the vineyards. The vineyard management team also has won awards for tilling the soil sustainably—an important honor in such a sensitive ecosystem.

Upshot: the final or eventual positive outcomeor conclusion, action or series of events. The end result of our winemaker’s passion for blending flavorful, deeply nuanced and unique wines. Exclusively from vineyards in california’s best wine growing regions, our blends offer a sumptuous, almost magical outcome of the growing season and winemaking process.
The front label visually depicts the winemaking process from the harvest to the release via circular calendar. Most importantly the label also educates consumersand allows them to follow an overview of the winemaking process from start to finish. Each label is unique to the wine made in that vintage and changes every year. Our winemaker’s passion for winemaking and more specifically the craft of blending is key to the story of upshot. The outcome or upshot of the blending process is the red blend upshot.
